Mission Statement
The Laguna Public Library is committed to serving the community of Laguna Pueblo as well as surrounding communities by providing access to quality information and resources that enhance and contribute to individual knowledge, enlightenment, and enjoyment through library materials, services and emerging technologies. Laguna Public Library recognizes a responsibility to provide a place for cultural learning and preservation of the Laguna culture and history; as well as creating a pleasant and safe environment for all to discover the value of libraries.
Scope of Work
Laguna Public Library serves the Pueblo of Laguna as well as surrounding communities. Our 2,800 sq. ft. facility provides traditional library services while utilizing emerging technologies to enhance opportunities for broader access to information resources. The library maintains regular hours of operation, including evening and weekend hours. Library maintains a well balanced and comprehensive resource of books, periodicals, databases, DVDs, local Laguna history materials; as well as computers, software, technology, and high-speed/wireless internet access. Other library resources include print, copy, fax, scanning, reference, programming, and inter-library loan services. The library maintains all of the above for all age groups and needs of the Laguna community. We are a public facility and welcome everyone to utilize the library and its resources.
Education
The Pueblo of Laguna places a high emphasis on education; therefore, the Laguna Public Library strives to fulfill its mission statement, “by providing access to quality information and resources that enhance and contribute to individual knowledge, enlightenment, and enjoyment through library materials and emerging technologies”. As a program promoting education, the importance of the library connects students of all ages with books, periodicals, DVDs, computers, emerging technologies, the internet, databases, printing and fax services, inter-library loan, reference assistance, cultural knowledge and history, literacy programs, and others.
As a tribal library, we possess uniqueness from other public libraries. Tribal libraries serve multiple roles. They preserve tribal culture and history for future generations including the preservation of culture, cultural and tribal knowledge base, language, and oral history as well as special collections of important tribal and governmental documents. They develop collections that support culturally based curriculum and community members’ life-long learning needs. They interpret and create library policies and services that reflect community needs and protocol. They assist tribal members to develop reading skills, information literacy, and computer literacy. They are also seen as information centers to help combat common societal problems such as unemployment, addictions, dropouts, and diseases. Tribal librarians are an essential link between generations of the past and future.
